KnotWise is built for sailors who take data seriously. Here is a transparent overview of what we store, where and how it is protected.
Where your data is stored
Locally on your device: All logbook data is stored in a local database on each device running KnotWise. It is there whether or not you have a connection, and it does not depend on our servers being reachable.
In the cloud (Sync and Share plans only): On the Sync and Share plans, and during your trial, your data is also kept in the KnotWise Cloud, hosted in Switzerland — subject to Swiss and European data protection law (nDSG / GDPR).
What we store
- Logbook entries, passages, crew details, maintenance tasks and inventory
- Attached photos and documents
- Account information (email address, subscription status)
What we do not do
- We do not sell your data to third parties
- We do not use your logbook data for advertising
- We do not share your data with anyone outside of what is required to operate the service
Data transmission
All data transmitted between your device and our servers is encrypted in transit using TLS. Your logbook data is private and accessible only to you.
Your rights
You can export your complete data at any time via Export → Data Export (CSV and GPX). You can delete your account yourself in the app — see How do I delete my account? — or write to privacy@knotwise.app. On the Free plan nothing of your logbook is kept on our side at all; what happens to the cloud copy when a subscription ends is in What happens to my data if I cancel my subscription?
