Backing Up and Restoring Your Logbook

Modified on Fri, 8 May at 5:05 PM

KnotWise stores all your data locally on your device. The backup feature lets you export a complete copy of your logbook as a single ZIP file — useful before resetting the app, switching to a new device or starting a charter trip on a different vessel.

What a backup contains

A KnotWise backup is a single ZIP file that includes everything:

  • All passages and log entries
  • Vessel profile and settings
  • Crew list including passport details and photos
  • Maintenance records and inventory
  • Attached photos and documents
  • Safety checklists

Creating a backup

  1. Go to SettingsData Backup
  2. Tap or click «Create Backup»
  3. Save the ZIP file to a location of your choice — iCloud, local storage or an external drive

Restoring from a backup

  1. Go to SettingsData Backup
  2. Tap or click «Restore Backup»
  3. Select your ZIP file — KnotWise restores all data immediately
Restoring a backup replaces all current data on the device. If you are on a Sync or Share plan, the restored data will sync to the cloud and overwrite the cloud copy. Create a backup of your current data first if needed.

Resetting your logbook

Two reset options are available in SettingsData Backup:

  • «Reset Passages & Logbook» — removes all log entries and passages. Your vessel profile, crew, maintenance records, inventory and settings are preserved. Use this at the start of a new season or a charter trip on the same boat.
  • «Reset to New Vessel» — full reset for switching to a different boat. All data is cleared. Use this when moving to a charter yacht with different equipment, crew and dimensions.
