Sharing Your Logbook — Advanced Guide
The Share plan gives friends, family or your home base a live window into your voyage — via a private link, no login required. This article covers everything about activating, managing and understanding the share feature.
What recipients see on share.knotwise.app
When someone opens your share link, they see a dedicated view at share.knotwise.app showing:
- Current position — plotted on the map, based on your most recent log entry
- Passage route — the full track of your current or most recent passage, drawn from all recorded log entry positions
- Logbook entries — the log entries for the shared passage, including position, weather, sails and notes
- Vessel name — shown as context for the share page
Important — this is not a real-time GPS tracker. The position shown always reflects your last saved log entry. If you log every four hours on watch, your position updates every four hours. If no entry has been added to the current passage, no position is displayed.
How to activate your share link
- Navigate to Settings in the left sidebar
- Locate the Share section
- Enable the share link toggle
- Copy the generated link — it is unique to your account
- Share the link directly with whoever should be able to follow your voyage
Keeping your position current — best practices
The usefulness of your share page depends entirely on how regularly you log entries. For anyone following your passage, we recommend:
- Logging at consistent watch intervals — every 2, 3 or 4 hours is standard for offshore passages
- Adding a log entry when entering or leaving port — so your position reflects your actual location
- Creating a new passage for each voyage leg — the share page always reflects the most recent passage with entries
Privacy and access control
| Aspect | How it works |
|---|---|
| Who can access | Anyone with the link — no login required |
| What they cannot do | Edit entries, access account settings or see personal crew data beyond the logbook |
| Deactivating | Disable the toggle in Settings → Share — the link immediately stops working |
| Resetting the link | Generate a new link in Settings → Share — the old link becomes invalid immediately |
If you have shared your link publicly or want to restrict access, reset the link at any time. The previous link will cease to work as soon as a new one is generated.
What is not shown on the share page
- Crew blood types and emergency contact details — these remain private
- Maintenance records and inventory
- Account and billing information
- Passages you have not navigated to (only the active or most recent passage is shown)
Share plan requirement
The share feature is exclusive to the Share plan. If you are on the Free or Sync plan, the Share section in Settings will prompt you to upgrade. Compare plans at knotwise.app/pricing.
Common questions
Someone says the map shows an old position — why?
The position reflects the last saved log entry. Ask them to refresh the page, and check that you have logged a recent entry in the active passage.
My share link stopped working — what happened?
Check that the share toggle is still enabled in Settings → Share, and that your Share plan subscription is active. Contact support@knotwise.app if the issue persists.
Can I share different passages with different people?
Not currently — your share link gives access to the same view for everyone. Each KnotWise account has one share link.
