Sharing Your Logbook

The Share plan lets you share a live view of your logbook with friends, family, your home base — or anyone you choose — through a private link. No login is required on their end, and you decide, link by link, exactly what each person sees.

What recipients see

A recipient opens your private link at share.knotwise.app and sees your passage on an interactive chart: your route and your most recent position, plus — depending on what you choose to share — your weather and sailing data, photos, and logbook notes. They can filter the view by season or by individual passage, toggle a wind overlay on or off, and replay the passage from start to finish.

The view is live and read-only — it updates as you log new entries, provided your device is online. It reflects your last recorded log entry and is not a real-time GPS tracker: if no entry exists for the current passage, no position is shown. Guests never see your account settings, crew details, or any entries you have not synced.

Replay a passage

On the share page, a Play button animates the passage along your route. A timeline player at the bottom offers play, pause, and a speed control (1×, 4×, 12×), and you can scrub to any moment. As the replay runs:

• a ship symbol follows your route in the sail or engine configuration you logged;
• a compact instrument cluster shows speed, wind, course, barometric pressure and sea state at each point;
• photos appear at the moment you took them;
• a chapter card marks the start of each passage.

A fullscreen button clears the page to a clean stage — useful for screen recording. The replay respects the «reduced motion» setting in the viewer's browser, falling back to manual stepping through the log points.

Controlling what you share

You control what every link reveals from Settings → Sharing, under Public Passage Links. Each link is configured on its own, so two links to the same passage can show completely different things — the settings live on the link, not on your account.

Within a link, what you share is grouped into four layers. Each layer has its own switch, with an (i) tooltip explaining what it covers — except Route & navigation, which is always on, because without a track there is nothing to show.

A switched-off layer is enforced at the database level — the share page can only ever return what that particular link is permitted to show. Your logbook notes are never shared unless you switch them on.

Embedding a passage on a website

Each link includes a copyable embed snippet. Paste it into a website the same way you would embed a map, and the passage — including the replay — appears inline. You will find the snippet in Settings → Sharing, next to the link.

Creating a link

1. Go to Settings → Sharing.
2. Under Public Passage Links, select «+ Create new link».
3. Enter a label (for example «Family» or «Crew») and confirm.
4. Set the layer switches for this link — Route & navigation stays on; switch Weather & sailing data, Photos and Logbook notes on or off as you wish.
5. Copy the link — or the embed snippet — and share it.

Managing your links

You can keep up to 5 links at a time, each with its own label and its own layer settings — for example, one for your crew and one for family. The link itself is private: only someone who has it can open it.

• Deactivate a link to take it offline — it returns a 404 immediately and can be reactivated later.
• Delete a link to remove it permanently.

To free up a slot for a new link, delete an existing one — a deactivated link still counts towards the limit of 5. You can change a link's layer settings, deactivate it, or delete it at any time from Settings → Sharing.
