NMEA Integration

Modified on Fri, 8 May at 4:22 PM

KnotWise supports importing instrument data from your onboard electronics via NMEA, eliminating manual entry of navigation values and reducing the risk of transcription errors.

Subscription required: NMEA live data is available on the Share plan. Compare plans at knotwise.app/pricing →

Supported standard

KnotWise connects via NMEA 0183 over WiFi (TCP or UDP). Most NMEA-to-WiFi bridges and repeaters — including those connected to NMEA 2000 networks — publish their data as NMEA 0183 sentences over the local network, which is the format KnotWise reads.

What data is imported

When connected, the following log entry fields can be populated automatically from your instruments:

  • Position (Latitude / Longitude)
  • SOG and COG (Speed and Course Over Ground)
  • True and apparent wind speed and direction
  • Barometric pressure

How to connect

NMEA connection is configured in SettingsInstruments. Your device must be on the same local WiFi network as your NMEA data source. Enter the IP address and port of your NMEA bridge — refer to your hardware documentation or the table below for default values.

Supported hardware

Any standard NMEA-to-WiFi converter is compatible. The following devices are confirmed to work with KnotWise. Default IP and port values are listed — most devices allow these to be changed via a built-in web interface.

Specifications and default values may change. Always verify the current technical details on the manufacturer's website before configuring your connection.

Raymarine: The built-in WiFi on current Raymarine displays uses a proprietary protocol that is not compatible with KnotWise. A standard NMEA-to-WiFi bridge connected to the NMEA 0183 output — or a SeaTalk-to-NMEA bridge — is required for Raymarine installations.

Manual override

All NMEA-populated fields can be manually edited at any time. Instrument data is a starting point — you remain in full control of every log entry.
